Best Practices for your MacBook, Router, and Devices

Here is a list of best practices that we’ve compiled throughout development. It covers tips for better running your system, Wi-Fi router, and devices. Do you have any tips or tricks we need to know about? Share them on our Audiofusion facebook page and your tips and trick could be featured here in the future!!

Laptop

MacBook and WiFi configuration

  • Run your Macbook only on A/C power to avoid CPU throttling which will limit performance.

Networking best practices

  • Configure your router to use unused WiFi channels to avoid interference. Not sure how? Check out our video about using a free tool from the Mac app store called WiFi Explorer Lite. In this video we show you how to scan your venue for WiFi, how to choose the best channel, select the channel width and set up your WiFi router for best results.
  • Allow your iOS devices running Performer to connect only with one of the radios on your WiFi router running in the 5GHz band. The 2.4 GHz band simply does not have enough bandwidth to deliver real-time audio.
  • Connect your MacBook via Ethernet and turn off WiFi. You can also set your MacBook networking to configure automatically. Go to System Preferences->Network->Select Ethernet (or Thunderbolt, etc.) interface->Advanced->Hardware->Configure: Automatically.
  • Don’t make MacBook WiFi/network settings changes while SoundCaster is streaming! Changes while the system is running can disrupt audio streaming to any connected devices.

iPhone

Device configuration

  • Turn on Airplane Mode- That should disable iCloud access by other background services such as Find my iPhone/iPad, iCloud Drive, iCloud Backup as well as individual apps that use iCloud.. If you don’t turn this off, your device will try to connect every 5 seconds!
  • Set Location Services to ‘off’ – This is a separate setting not affected by Airplane Mode. Access Location Services by going to: Settings->Privacy->Location Services
  • And last, but not least, be sure to quit the Settings app and any other apps running in the background. This will keep the Settings app from doing any disruptive tasks.
